Yeah, the Matrix sequels were garbage. Same visual effects, but none of the heart. You can see the directors stole the script for the first one from someone else (she sued them and won). Their spinoffs were garbage because they didn't have the magic. I have less opinion on Mel Brooks. Like you, I wanted to find them funny, but they were just so crass.
I've been wondering about whether to watch the sequels or not. "We give more content, but it's disappointing content" has been so common now with big franchises, and the Matrix sequels are almost infamous in that regard, so I'm cautious about going in to something well-known for not living up to the first one.
Your comment about them stealing the script intrigued me, so I looked a little more into it. I couldn't find definite evidence for it being the case (since it and most cyberpunk stories were pretty heavily inspired by Neuromancer), but thank you for introducing me to this new piece of Matrix lore.
